A lily pond is a tranquil body of water
covered with water lilies and other floating aquatic
plants. For natural appearance, the pond should be
located in a flat area at the lowest part of the site.
A small waterfall can be used to create sound and visual
interest, but excessive turbulence will limit the growth
of large floating plants. For minimal maintenance,
the fish population should not exceed on inch of fish
per square foot of pond surface. A depth of 18” to
24” is sufficient.
Lily ponds are very natural looking and the plant
containers can't be seen. They are also less expensive
than a concrete pond and fish friendly. However, they
can have higher maintenance because the pump is not
protected by a skimmer. They also have no mechanical
or biological filter to remove debris. Because of this,
an ecosystem may never completely establish because
of the lack of filtration.
